A Prospective Study on the Incidence, Risk Factors, and Treatment Strategies for Cellulitis Patients Admitted to DG Hospital

Abstract : This study aims to investigate the incidence, risk factors, and treatment protocol of cellulitis among hospitalized patients to improve clinical management. A prospective observational study was conducted on 120 patients diagnosed with cellulitis at DG Hospital between September 2024 and February 2025, reviewing clinical records for demographic data, risk factors, clinical presentation, and treatment modalities. The incidence rate was 8.5%, predominantly affecting males (62.4%) over 26 years, especially in the 26-40 age groups, with common risk factors including tobacco use (25.8%) and comorbidities such as diabetes mellitus and hypertension (22.5%). The most affected site was the left leg (43), followed by the right leg (32), while both hands and umbilical cellulitis have the lowest incidences. Treatment strategies aligned with current best practices, with incision and drainage being performed for purulent cases, while magnesium sulfate (MgSO4) dressings was used in non-purulent cases, revealing a negative correlation between disease severity and outcomes. Early presentation was significantly associated with lower disease severity (p<0.05). These findings underscore the importance of prompt diagnosis and management of comorbidities to reduce morbidity and improve patient prognosis.
