Abstract :
This study was to explore the relationship between the teachers’ teaching methods and the academic performance
of senior secondary school students in Koidu City, Sierra Leone. It intends to find out the best method for instruction in
schools and how effective they might be. The researcher started with a literature review that took its foundations from
existing works by various scholars in the field of education.
This research work used mixed-method approach, which combines with quantitative and qualitative surveys. 80
respondents were targeted, which includes 50 students, 25 teachers and 5 Principals of the five selected secondary schools of
study. The research also revealed some of the causes of poor performance of the students in their external examinations:
lack of teaching materials, poor salary, lack of motivational factor, indiscipline of students, overcrowded classrooms,
shortage of qualified teachers, and lack of conducive learning environment.
Furthermore, this study may be considered significant in several ways: it helps to increase the teachers’ level of
awareness and understanding of the use of most of the instructional techniques and when necessary to apply them. The
findings of this work will provide the teachers with feedback on their teaching competencies in the use of different teaching
methods.
