Abstract :
Water is very essential and widely used by humans, animals and for the success of agricultural products. The
inhabitants resort to use of borehole, sachet and bottle water for drinking and domestic use. There is paucity of information
on bacterial contamination and phytochemical properties of drinking water sources in major slums of Lagos city. Such
contaminants may be the cause of frequent febrile illnesses experienced amongst the inhabitants of these slums. The aim of
this study is to determine the bacteriological quality and physicochemical properties of drinking water sources in slums of
Lagos State, Nigeria. The six selected slum areas are Mushin, Makoko, Bariga, Ijora, Ajegunle and Oniru; the selection was
based on the population size of the area. The specific objectives of the study are to (i) determine the bacteria quality of
drinking water sources in slums of Lagos State, (ii) determine the total coliform and E.coli count of the borehole water in
the slums of Lagos State, and (iii) determine the physicochemical properties of the various sources of drinking water in the
different slums of Lagos State. A total of 396 water samples were analyzed for the presence of pathogenic bacterial
contaminants using Membrane Filtration Techniques, Culture and Biochemical assays to identify the bacterial isolates.
