Commuting Woes: The Daily Transportation Struggles of City College of Davao Students and Employees and Sustainable Mobility Solutions

Abstract : The daily difficulties experienced by students and employees have really a great effect and impact in their academic performance, work efficiency, and overall well-being. This qualitative study investigates the transportation issues facing by both students and employees of the City College of Davao (CCD). It delves into their personal experiences, coping mechanisms that demand potential solutions to enhance mobility. Employing a phenomenological approach, data were collected through comprehensive interviews and focus group discussions with carefully chosen individuals who regularly commute to and from the college. Through thematic analysis, the study identified key recurring issues such as prolonged travel durations, costly fares, erratic traffic conditions, insufficient public transport services, and safety risks. These challenges often lead to physical fatigue, heightened stress, and diminished academic or work performance. To manage these hardships, commuters adopt strategies like modifying travel schedules, taking alternate routes, or carpooling with peers. However, these approaches are typically short-term and fall short in addressing broader systemic problems. Participants underscored the need for institutional action—such as providing shuttle services, collaborating with transport operators, improving pedestrian access, and offering digital tools for real-time updates. The study urges local government agencies, transport planners, and educational institutions to work together in creating inclusive, sustainable, and commuter-friendly transportation solutions. By resolving these mobility barriers, CCD can improve the educational and workplace experience for its students and staff.
