Abstract :
This paper examines the determinants of the
quality of mathematics education. A multi-stage random
stratified sampling method was used to select students
and schools. To identify determinants of quality of general
secondary school mathematics education and to explore
the relationship between students’ mathematics
performance and independent variables a multiple linear
regression model was developed. The results indicated
that family supports, students’ mathematics background,
interest and motivation of students and teachers, the
participation of students and cooperation between
students and teachers were the most significant predictor
of students’ mathematics achievement. To change the
image of students and society at a large have in
mathematics the school should work with different
stakeholders to create awareness about the importance of
mathematics for society as a whole. The school should also
exert more effort to develop teacher’s pedagogical skills
on how to motivate and participate in all students equally
in the classroom were recommended.
