Abstract :
This study investigated the psychological working conditions, and to identify the important predictors of occupational
stress among nurses in the Shama District. Questionnaire was the main tool for data collection. The multi-stage sampling
technique which includes; stratified sampling, purposive and simple random sampling techniques were employed to select
both health facilities and respondents for the study. Data collected were analysed using SPSS with results presented using
means and standard deviation counts. The study found that physical symptoms such as fatigue, muscular tension, and
dermatological disorders are experienced among nurses when stressed. Again, depression, anxiety, discouragement,
irritability, and cognitive difficulties were psychological symptoms experienced by nurses due to stress. An increase in
sickness or absenteeism, aggression, a drop in work performance, problems with interpersonal relationships, just to mention
a few, was reported as behavioral symptoms experienced among nurses as a result of stress. The study recommends that to
foster quality service delivery and a stress-free workplace for nurses, management can also ensure that they hire highly
competent nurses, create conducive work environments, train nurses on how to effectively manage their stress, ensure that
each nurse has a brief break built into their schedule, and make sure the break rooms are comfortable
