Abstract : The synthesis and characterization of biodegradable starch-clay composite films produced from potato and corn starches reinforced with montmorillonite clay was the primary focus in the work. Dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA) tested the mechanical and viscoelastic characteristics of these composites. Accurate readings were obtained by calibrating and using the DMA model 2980 in multi-strain mode. A casting technique produced several ratios of starch and clay, showing that the inclusion of clay greatly improved mechanical strength, tensile characteristics, and elongation at break of the composite films above pure starch films.
