Tertiary education is an important element in economic and social development and a major determinant of a university student’s career path. Learning theories describe how information is captured, processed and stored during a learning process. Better understanding of learning theories is very important for the university teachers to design their teaching process and thereby create an environment that facilitate higher order thinking and deep learning. This review describes different learning theories and their potential use in the tertiary education context.
