Abstract : Diplazium esculentum (locally known as “pako”) was investigated for its potential application as a natural gelling agent in topical pharmaceutical formulations. Traditionally recognized as an edible fern in the Philippines, D. esculentum contains mucilage rich in polysaccharide components that contribute to gel formation, viscosity, and water-retention properties. This study aimed to formulate and evaluate Diclofenac diethylamine topical gels using D. esculentum mucilage as a natural alternative to the synthetic gelling agent Carbopol 940. The fern fronds were collected, authenticated, cleaned, air-dried, powdered, and extracted using hot water.

Keywords : Diplazium esculentum, Mucilage, Natural Gelling Agent, Diclofenac Diethylamine, Topical Gel, Carbopol 940, Phytochemical Profiling, FTIR Spectroscopy.
