Abstract :
The present study was conducted to examine the role of school education in preventing adolescent substance abuse
among higher secondary students in Mawlai, East Khasi Hills District, Meghalaya. A quantitative descriptive survey method
was adopted for the study. The sample consisted of 201 Class XII Arts stream students selected through stratified random
sampling from government-aided and private higher secondary schools. Data were collected using a self-developed
questionnaire comprising 32 items. The collected data were analysed using percentage, frequency, mean, standard deviation,
and MannWhitney U test. The findings revealed that students possessed a high level of awareness regarding substance abuse
and recognized the important role played by schools in preventing substance abuse through awareness programmes,
guidance, counselling, and educational activities. The study also found differences in perceptions based on gender and type
of school management. The study concludes that school education plays a significant role in preventing adolescent substance
abuse by promoting awareness, positive attitudes, and healthy behaviour among students.
