Abstract : The present study was conducted to examine the role of school education in preventing adolescent substance abuse among higher secondary students in Mawlai, East Khasi Hills District, Meghalaya. A quantitative descriptive survey method was adopted for the study. The sample consisted of 201 Class XII Arts stream students selected through stratified random sampling from government-aided and private higher secondary schools. Data were collected using a self-developed questionnaire comprising 32 items. The collected data were analysed using percentage, frequency, mean, standard deviation, and MannWhitney U test. The findings revealed that students possessed a high level of awareness regarding substance abuse and recognized the important role played by schools in preventing substance abuse through awareness programmes, guidance, counselling, and educational activities.
