With landfills ranked third in India in terms of
greenhouse gas emissions and mounting public pressure,
the Indian government amended its solid waste
management policy after 16 years. India is plagued by a
massive garbage problem. According to projections,
India will require a territory the size of Singapore to
dump its rubbish by 2030. India is in a race against time
to create appropriate urban waste management
techniques as its urban population grows. This article
provides an institutional framework for addressing this
serious environmental and public health issue and
bringing about systemic change in the industry and
effective alternative sources to recycle and reuse the
generated non-biodegradable wastes. There are also
other startups working unnoticed to lessen the buildup
of created waste, which, with adequate public
recognition, can reduce the waste piled up.
