Abstract :
Urban recreational facilities are critical components of sustainable city development, providing essential services
that enhance human well-being, promote social cohesion, and deliver key ecosystem benefits such as climate regulation,
biodiversity conservation, and air purification. Despite their importance, limited attention has been given to the integrated
assessment of their spatial distribution, user characteristics, and ecosystem service functions, particularly in rapidly growing
cities of developing countries. This study examines recreational facilities in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja,
Nigeria, with the aim of evaluating their spatial usage patterns, socio-demographic characteristics of users, recreational
behaviours, and perceived ecosystem service contributions. A mixed-methods approach was adopted, combining
quantitative surveys of 462 park users with qualitative data from key informant interviews and focus group discussions.
Data were collected through questionnaires, field observations, and stakeholder engagements across identified recreational
parks in Abuja. Descriptive statistical techniques were used to analyze quantitative data, while qualitative responses were
thematically analyzed to provide contextual insights. Findings reveal distinct functional and demographic differentiation
among park types. Large Formal Parks serve a diverse population with emphasis on exercise, environmental education, and
passive recreation; Neighborhood Parks function as essential community-based spaces for daily use, nature appreciation,
and family interaction; while Commercial/Amusement Parks are predominantly youth-oriented, event-driven leisure
spaces. Across all park types, users are generally well-educated, with varying income, occupational, and marital profiles
shaping patterns of visitation and use. The study further shows that recreational parks in Abuja provide significant
perceived ecosystem services, particularly in relation to mental health support, aesthetic improvement, and climate
regulation. However, awareness of regulating ecosystem services such as water management and biodiversity conservation
remains limited. Visitation patterns also reveal spatial and temporal inequalities, with peak use occurring during weekends
and festive periods, and evidence of uneven access and infrastructure quality across park categories. The study concludes
that recreational facilities in Abuja play a vital socio-ecological role but are constrained by spatial inequality, infrastructure
deficits, and limited public understanding of their full environmental value. It recommends differentiated park management
strategies, improved infrastructure investment, enhanced environmental education, and strengthened urban planning
integration to promote equitable access and long-term sustainability of recreational ecosystems in the city.
