Abstract :
This study examines the interplay between sustainability performance, strategic partnerships for the 17 Sustainable
Development Goals (SDGs), and leadership competencies, and how these factors collectively affect global university rankings.
Guided by Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR), Shareholder Value Theory (SVT), and Transformational Leadership, it
uses a cross-sectional explanatory design with 351 respondents from four state universities and colleges in Region VII,
Philippines. Of 35 indicators, 19 were removed after rigorous Exploratory and Confirmatory Factor Analysis (EFA and CFA),
and Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) confirmed a good model fit. Results challenge conventional assumptions, showing
no direct link between environmental sustainability and overall performance, while economic sustainability aligns strongly
with CSR and SVT. Social sustainability’s effect is inconclusive, but institutional partnerships positively impact sustainability
performance. Leadership competencies significantly influence global rankings but do not directly mediate sustainability
outcomes. Limitations include a limited sample and lack of longitudinal data. Future research should expand institutional
coverage, use mixed methods, revisit excluded constructs, and incorporate cross-cultural, longitudinal designs. The study
offers empirical insights that both affirm and question existing theories, contributing to policy, governance, and strategic
decision-making for sustainability and competitiveness in Philippine higher education institutions (HEIs).
